-What is porcelain and how is it made?
Porcelain is a synthetic substance, created by compressing clay dust mixed with a water solution into tile molds. The result is a material that is much denser and tougher than the average ceramic tile.
-What are the benefits of porcelain tile?
Because porcelain is man-made, it can come in virtually any size, shape or color, including porcelain made to look identical to both travertine and hardwood flooring. As a result of porcelains high density, it is incredibly resistant to stains; the tile will generally absorb less than one half of one percent of the moisture that it comes in contact with, making upkeep on this tile a breeze. Porcelain tile is also generally cheaper than natural stone tile because it is man-made and therefore easier to acquire.
-What is the maintenance like for porcelain tile?
Maintenance for porcelain tile is quite simple compared to that of natural stone tile. Porcelain tile needs only occasional cleanings with soap and water, or a window cleaner for tough messes. Porcelain is extremely durable so it will not scratch, chip, stain or fade easily.
-Where should I use porcelain tile?
Because of its durability and resistance to stains, porcelain tile is ideal for high traffic areas, or households with children / pets. Porcelain can be used virtually anywhere in the home, from bedroom floors to kitchen back splashes to shower walls. It can even be used outdoors for patios or garden walk ways. There are virtually endless possibilities when it comes to applications for porcelain tile due to its durability and versatility.

-What is travertine and where does it come from?
Travertine belongs to a larger family of stone called limestone, which is produced from quarries all over the world. Travertine is formed by minerals dissolving in ground water and then being deposited on the earth's surface by rivers, natural springs or geysers.
-What colors does travertine tile come in?
Travertine comes in a variety of natural colors including beige, ivory, rose, gold, silvery green and walnut. The coloring in travertine is the result of organic impurities, such as iron compounds.
-Should I expect color variance?
Yes. If you order a sample and then place a full order a few weeks later, the tile that you receive might not be the exact color as your sample. Because travertine is acquired from quarries, we receive our travertine tile in different batches, resulting in slight color variances.
-What finishes are available for travertine?
There are four basic finishes for travertine:
Tumbled: Tumbled travertine tile displays a matte finish unique to the way the tile is made. The travertine tile is placed in a large drum with many small rocks and chunks of cement, where it is then tumbled until it is finished. During the tumbling process, the small rocks chip away at the travertine tile, resulting in tile with worn and visibly chipped faces and edges and muted colors; this look is very popular with homes and buildings desiring a rustic aesthetic.
Honed: Honed travertine tile, sometimes known as matte finished tile, is characterized by the filling in of the holes and pockets that make travertine so recognizable. When building with travertine, the holes in the stone can compromise the integrity of the building, therefore the holes in honed travertine have been filled with an epoxy resin and ground to a flat finish. Because travertine is a soft stone, it can be smoothed on the surface, but not fully polished, resulting in the matte look. Honed travertine displays a smooth, even finish with clean, flat edges.
Polished: Polished travertine tile goes through a similar process to honed travertine with some slight differences. Polished travertine leaves the natural holes in the stone unfilled, while honed travertine is characterized by the tile's natural pockets being filled with resin. Like honed travertine, polished travertine is smoothed down and sanded with diamond pads, but more thoroughly than honed tile, resulting in a polished, vibrantly colored finish. This finish is not recommended in wet rooms, such as bathrooms because of the high slip factor when wet.
Brushed: Brushed travertine tile remains unfilled, similar to tumbled and polished travertine. It gets its texture by being finished with a steel brush that smooths out the sharp parts of the stone, yet still leaves the travertine with a natural, textured matte finish.
-What is the maintenance for travertine tile?
Because travertine is a natural stone, it requires more attention than porcelain, which is man made. Travertine is a porous stone, meaning that it is susceptible to stains and is therefore recommended to be sealed at least once, if not twice a year to keep it looking its best. Any spills should be immediately cleaned up with a natural stone cleaner (one without citrus) to reduce the risk of stains. Travertine is also highly reactive with acidic solutions, such as orange juice and vinegar, so customers should be extra careful when it comes to acidic spills, as they can damage the tile.
-What are the benefits of travertine tile?
Despite having more upkeep than porcelain tile, travertine continues to be the most popular flooring choice for homes in America today; many feel that the authentic rustic aesthetic and beauty of travertine is worth the maintenance. Another benefit of travertine is that it is considered easier to cut and shape than other man made tiles because it is made of a soft, natural rock, rendering it somewhat easier to work with when dealing with complex designs.
-Where should I use travertine?
The most popular use for travertine is for household flooring, however it can be used anywhere in the home from showers to wall coverings to counter tops. It is also a popular tile for outside use on backyard islands and for driveways in the form of pavers. The fact that travertine is a natural stone (meaning that it is porous and is considered one of the softer rocks) should be considered when deciding where to use your travertine tile. Sealers will provide some protection from the environment, however being aware of potential damage that may occur from room to room will help you make an informed decision.

-What is limestone?
Limestone is a sedimentary rock, meaning that it is formed from the calcified remains of tiny shells and micro-skeletons. These elements compressed overtime and combined with varying amounts of clay, silt and sand, form solid rock.
-How durable is limestone tile?
In the world of natural stone, limestone is considered to be one of the softer stones. However, limestone is still a natural stone and will last a lifetime if cared for properly.
-How should I maintain / clean my limestone tile?
Placing dust mats outside of doorways / entry ways will help to eliminate the transfer of dirt and grit from shoes to your floor. Regular vacuuming and sweeping is also recommended for this purpose. If left on the floor, dirt will scratch off limestone's protective sealant, making is susceptible to scratches and stains. It is recommended that you seal your limestone tile every one or two years, depending on the usage. For cleaning, use a pH neutral cleaner that has been specifically approved for limestone. Warm water and a mild soap paired with a soft dish washing rag will work also. Harsh chemicals and cleaners can do irreparable damage to limestone tile.
-Should I expect color variance between the tiles?
Yes. Like travertine, limestone is also produced from different quarries. Your tile will be the same color overall, with possible slight color variances.
-Where should I use limestone?
You can use limestone anywhere in the house, as long as it is properly sealed and maintained. It can be used for flooring, shower walls, accent walls, counter tops, fire pits and even hard water aquariums!

-What is marble and where is it from?
Marble is a kind of limestone that is characterized by swirls of color from impurities in the calcite from which it is composed. Marble is formed in quarries below the earth's surface and harvested to be cut and sold.
-How durable is marble?
Marble has been depended on throughout history as a solid building material; the Taj Mahal is clad entirely in marble! Although marble can be damaged by acidic solutions and metal abrasions, if treated with the proper care, it will last a lifetime. A proper sealant and frequent cleanings help marble to maintain its strength and beauty.
-Should I seal my marble tile?
Yes. Marble is a porous stone that will absorb liquid, which will result in stains and damage if not sealed properly. A sealant will ensure that whatever is spilled on your marble remains on the surface until you quickly clean it up. Sealing your marble will also help keep your marble tile looking new for as long as possible. It is recommended that you seal your marble every one or two years, depending on the usage.
-How do I clean marble?
Floor mats outside of entrances will help reduce the amount of dirt and debris that gets tracked in the house; over time, dirt can break down the sealant on your tile and leave scratches on the surface. Regular cleanings should involve either a damp cloth, soft broom or vacuum. As marble is susceptible to damage from acidic substances, any spills should be immediately cleaned up with a natural stone cleaner approved for marble. Your sealant will help protect against staining, but it is best to clean up spills right away. Steer clear of any cleaners containing bleach, vinegar or harsh chemicals.
-Do you sell marble slabs?
Yes. Please contact us for further information.

-How do I clean slate tile?
Basic daily cleaning with a broom or vacuum cleaner is recommended to keep your slate tile free of potentially damaging dirt and debris. For more periodic deep cleanings, mix warm water with mild soap or detergent (non-acidic). Dip a sponge or mop into the solution and clean your tile with brisk, circular strokes. Once you have finished, go over the floor once more and wipe off soap residue with a mop dipped in plain water. Allow to air dry naturally.
